After India Women lifted their maiden World Cup trophy, captain Harmanpreet Kaur touched head coach Amol Muzumdar’s feet. Witnessing this heartwarming gesture, the world hailed the head coach, but is he just India’s head coach, or does he have another identity we’ve forgotten?
Back in 1993, a batter from Mumbai stepped into the domestic circuit, and cricket got a new superstar. That rising star was none other than Amol Muzumdar, now the head coach of the India Women. Despite piling up runs season after season, the dream of wearing the India cap never came true, but destiny had a grander script waiting for him.
In the 2012-13 season, he smashed a twin hundred for Andhra in the clash against Himachal Pradesh. Let’s revisit that unforgettable batting brilliance.
A classic ton in the first innings sets the tone for early dominance
Even after spending some glorious years with Mumbai cricket, Amol Muzumdar shifted to Andhra but channeled his same old brilliance. While facing Himachal Pradesh in the 2012 season of the prestigious Ranji Trophy, the batters shattered the record book with a twin century in both innings, and the world remained stunned by his heroics.
While batting first, Andhra faced some blows after losing some quick wickets. After Hemal Watekar walked away, Muzumdar joined Bodapati Sumanth, and the world saw a thrilling batting show. Dominating the opponent bowlers, they tightened their grip, crafting an impactful partnership.
Completing a half-century at a crucial point, Muzumdar smashed a magnificent hundred. When Andhra was looking for a revival, he delivered. His composed 101 off 165 balls, laced with 15 elegant boundaries, powered the team to a strong total of 372.
A second-innings masterclass steals the spotlight
The great thing never stops, and Amol Muzumdar proved it right as he carried on his exceptional form even in the second innings. Piling up the lead, the batter unleashed another masterclass. Batting at the number five position, he gave support when Andhra’s middle order needed it the most.
Stitching a 223-run partnership with Sumanth, Muzumdar smashed another ton of his glorious first-class career. In 213 deliveries, he played an outstanding innings of 104 runs with 13 boundaries. While Himachal Pradesh’s bowlers tried to fight back, Muzumdar’s composed counterattack kept them chasing leather and firmly tilted the game in Andhra's favor.
Amid all his heroics in the domestic circuit, these twin centuries stood tall. As the player never got a chance to fulfill his dream of playing for India, his stats speak louder than words. Today, as he lifts the World Cup as a coach, his journey comes full circle, a player’s unfulfilled dream reborn through his team’s triumph.
