On the night of November 2, the entire nation celebrated Diwali on an odd day as the golden girls of India lifted their maiden Women’s World Cup trophy. It was a moment drenched in glory and emotion, and the nation’s heart swelled with pride when former Indian women's stars finally held aloft the long-awaited trophy.

Even after retirement, they fulfilled her wish to touch the coveted, and that captured hearts. Among those moved by the moment was former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who expressed heartfelt admiration for the touching tribute.

Ashwin takes a dig at the men’s team

With decades of relentless hard work, grit, and several heartbreaks, the Women in Blue achieved glory with domination, and the entire nation witnessed a historic moment. Eleven warriors ended years of waiting with exceptional performance, and their destiny was rewarded with their maiden World Cup trophy.

Yet beyond the celebrations, their heartwarming gesture of sharing the trophy with the former legends Anjum Chopra, Mithali Raj, and Jhulan Goswami, who paved the way, truly stole the nation’s heart. When they held the cup, the nation felt their emotion. Praising the moment on his YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin lauded the gesture, remarking that the men’s team would likely never do the same.

“The entire Indian team gave the trophy to Mithali Raj. Why did they do it? I am actually taking my hat out. The Indian men's team never did it. They only say it sometimes in front of the media because they are media-trained. But I have not seen them give credit to the previous generations,” he said.

“What I have seen is discussions about 'my generation's team is better than yours'. But this women's team, Anjum Chopra was there, Mithali Raj was there, they gave the trophy to them in delight, telling them that the seeds that you sprinkled and watered are the seeds that are standing as winners today. I found that fascinating, unbelievably good,” he added.

Success takes time, not just one shot

What unfolded on November 2 wasn’t just the result of one tournament; it was the culmination of years of sacrifice, grit, and dreams. Legends like Anjum Chopra and Jhulan Goswami sowed the seeds long ago, paving the path for this triumph. Speaking on their move, Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted it was the perfect tribute to the star who had dreamt of the historic moment long ago.

“Today's win is not of today's alone. It has been a work of 25 years, probably three decades... That's why I find this women's team amazing. They have got everything on the right track. When you win, you are on a real high, and still you remember to celebrate the previous generations of cricketers who were there in the dressing room. They did that at that moment, not after somebody asked you to,” he said.

It's just not Ashwin; the move grabbed attention worldwide. After the heartbreaks of 2005 and 2017,  India Women marched into the 2025 World Cup final with renewed hope, and this time, destiny smiled back. Securing a 52-run victory over the South Africa Women, they fulfilled their long-desired dream.
