Shubman Gill has been officially named the new captain of the Indian Test team. At just 25 years old, Gill becomes the 37th player to lead India in red-ball cricket, and Siddarth Kaul has called the former’s journey an inspiring tale.
This decision comes shortly after two legends of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, announced their retirement from Test format earlier this month. While both will continue in the ODI format, the red ball team now moves into a new era under Gill’s leadership.
Meanwhile, former U19 World Cup winner Siddarth Kaul celebrated Gill’s promotion with a sweet social media message.
Siddarth Kaul Congratulates Shubman Gill With A Heartfelt Message
Former Indian fast bowler Siddarth Kaul shared a touching message for Shubman Gill on social media. He called Gill “a boy with a dream, guided by a father with a mission.”
Although some have questioned Gill’s consistency in Test matches so far, most experts and fans believe he is the right choice. He has shown maturity in pressure situations and impressed many with his calm attitude.
"Bhai, I’ve seen you from your U-19 days to becoming the Test captain — your journey is truly inspiring. Built on hard work, honesty, and passion for the game, this achievement also reflects your father’s vision, discipline, and sacrifices. A boy with a dream, guided by a father with a mission — today, you lead India with pride. Congratulations, Captain. 👏 The journey is just getting started," Kaul said.
The 25-year-old also captained the Gujarat Titans in the IPL this season and proved he has a good understanding of leadership.
While Shubman will lead India in whites, Rishabh Pant, the vice-captain, will act as his deputy.
Ajit Agarkar Explains Thought Behind Backing Gill As Captain
The chief selector of the BCCI, Ajit Agarkar, explained the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as India's new Test captain by highlighting long-term planning. He admitted the 25-year-old has no prior Test captaincy experience but said the choice wasn’t made just for the upcoming England tour. Apparently, the selection committee sees Gill as a long-term asset, as per feedback collected from the dressing room.
