Seventeen years ago, on October 31, 2005, former Indian skipper MS Dhoni played one of the greatest innings in ODI history. It was the third ODI match of seven-match series against Sri Lanka at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. MS Dhoni, also known as 'Thala', delivered his career-defining innings. He came to bat at no three and started the onslaught against Lankans, and in no time the star batter blasted an unbeaten 183 runs off just 145 balls, including 15 fours and 10 sixes. His blistering knock helped India secure a six-wicket win under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid.
Regarded as one of the finest captains, Dhoni led India to memorable victories. Under his leadership, India won the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Making his international debut against Bangladesh in 2004, Dhoni’s career spanned 16 years, during which he played 538 international matches across all formats.
Throughout his career, MS Dhoni was an impactful player in all formats. In 350 ODIs, he scored 10,773 runs at an impressive average of 50.57. He also amassed 4,876 runs in Tests and 1,617 runs in T20Is, displaying his versatility and consistency across different formats. His final international appearance came in July 2019 against New Zealand in the World Cup semi-finals, and he retired in August 2020, ending an illustrious cricketing journey.
MS Dhoni Set To Play 2025 IPL Season
MS Dhoni was last seen in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). As per recent reports, CSK plans to retain Dhoni for the 2025 season under a newly reintroduced IPL council rule that allows Indian players without national appearances for over five years to be classified as 'uncapped' players.
