Riding on a dominant performance from the bowlers, MI Cape Town took down Joburg Super Kings by 7 wickets to register their second win of the season in Match 7 of the ongoing SA20 2023. They are now placed first in the points table with nine points in three games.

Rabada led attack skittles Super Kings for 105 for 9

After being asked to bat first, Joburg Super Kings got off to a positive note, hitting Sam Curran for seventeen runs off the first over but was soon halted by a screamer of a nip-backer from Kagiso Rabada which sent Reeza Hendricks’ wickets cartwheeling. The Men in yellow could not absorb the early pressure and lost three wickets in the powerplay with just 34 on the board.

Skipper Faf du Plessis was looking to stitch a partnership with Leus du Plooy but was left clueless by Waqar Salamkheil, who knocked du Plessis’ stumps with a superb delivery and limited the visitors 41 for 4. Donavon Ferreira, who bailed the Super Kings out of trouble in their first game, soon lost his wicket as well.

Leus du Plooy tried his best to reconstruct the innings and just when a small partnership was building with Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith took another quick wicket, leaving Super Kings with no space to breathe. It was once again their last pair which added 21 runs for the 10th wicket and JSK posted a paltry 105 for 9 in 20 overs.

With the arrival of Rabada, it was Salamkheil, the 21-year-old left-arm chinaman who caught the eyes of many due to his superb spell bowling in the middle overs. Rashid Khan and Odean Smith also grabbed a couple, marking MICT’s superb day with the ball.

Chasing 106, MI Cape Town got off to a decent start while keeping their eyes on the potential bonus point. The hosts needed to chase the target of 106 within 16 overs to go home with the bonus points.

The opening duo of Dewald Brevis and Ryan Rickelton was very watchful against the new ball but never missed to smash the bad ball away for boundaries. MICT were 43 for no loss in the first six overs. Brevis tried to up the scoring rate post powerplay and extracted 15 runs against Phangiso in the 8th over.

Just when his partner Rickelton wanted to compliment him, Gerald Coetzee sent the MICT opener back to the pavilion. Coetzee, who was playing his first game of the tournament went on to remove Brevis as well. The 22-year-old seamer showed why he is regarded as the future of the South African pace squad.

Following that Phangiso bowled a couple of tight overs and the easy looking bonus point kept going away from the batting side. With so little to defend, the Super Kings successfully restricted MI Cape Town from getting the bonus point but it was a rather comfortable win for the boys in blue as they chased the target by seven wickets with 22 balls remaining.
