Afghanistan steamrolled hosts Zimbabwe in the second ODI match at the Harare Sports Club on December 19. With young opener Sediqullah Atal hogging the limelight with the bat, the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Here’s the timeline of how ZIM vs AFG panned out in Harare:
ZIM vs AFG Highlights: Sediqullah Atal Mounts 104 In Century Partnership With Malik
Afghanistan openers Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik mounted 191 runs for the first wicket in just 35 overs after getting invited to bat first. Malik carted 84 of those runs from 101 balls with 11 regal boundaries and a six before he was knocked over by young Zimbabwean paceman Newman Nyamhuri.
Atal went on to notch up his maiden ODI century by smacking his career-best score of 104 off 128. Glittering his innings with four sixes and eight boundaries, Atal’s monumental effort at the top of the order with Abdul Malik laid out a concrete foundation of a huge Afghanistan total upfront.
ZIM vs AFG Highlights: Shahidi’s Cameo Amidst Tumbling Wickets Takes AFG To 286
After the prized scalp of half-centurion Abdul Malik, fast bowler Newman Nyamhuri added two more to his tally in the form of Azmatullah Omarzai and a raging Sediqullah Atal in quick succession. Rahmat Shah was caught out by Brian Bennett off Trevor Gwandu for just five as Afghanistan crashed from 191-0 to 228-4 within seven overs.
Fortunately for Afghanistan, captain Hashmatullah Shahidi rectified his team’s middle-order struggles with a cunning 29* from 30 balls to take them to a competitive 286-6. Mohammad Nabi also chipped in with 18 quick runs at the death before becoming Gwandu’s second wicket of the day. In addition, new ball speedster Richard Ngarava toppled Ikram Alikhil for the hosts off the last ball of the innings to finish with figures of 1-49 from 10 overs.
ZIM vs AFG Highlights: Fazalhaq Farooqi, Omarzai Wreck Zimbabwe’s Top-Order
Zimbabwean opener Ben Curran was run out by Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi for a six-ball duck in the first over of the run-chase. His partner Tadiwanashe Marumani and captain Craig Ervine, meanwhile, were toppled by Afghanistan’s new ball expert Fazalhaq Farooqi.
Dion Myers at number three scored just a run in his 12-ball struggle at the crease before Azmatullah Omarzai ended his misery as the hosts crashed to 11-4 within the first seven overs.
ZIM vs AFG Highlights: Ghazanfar, Zadran Take 3 Each To Envelop ZIM In 18 Overs
Senior Zimbabwean all-rounders Sean Williams (16 off 18) and Sikandar Raza (19* off 32) established some sense of relief for the hosts after Afghanistan’s spectacular new ball blitz. However, their resistance lasted less than five overs and yielded just 21 runs before another batting collapse extinguished Zimbabwe’s response for 54 in 17.5 overs.
For Afghanistan, off-spinner AM Ghazanfar (3-9) and right-arm quick Naveed Zadran (3-13) picked up three wickets each in the innings as the visitors walked away with a record 232-run victory.
