Babar Azam once again proved why he is regarded as one of the finest batters in modern-day cricket with a gorgeous cover drive in the ongoing second ODI against South Africa at Newlands today (December 19). The incident occured in the third ball of the first over when Babar Azam played this elegant shot and this stroke in no time drew comparisons to the iconic cover drive of Virat Kohli.
Babar Azam's Shot Of The Day
It was a moment of pure class from Babar Azam. Marco Jansen bowled a full delivery just outside off stump, and Babar, with his trademark poise, leaned into the shot.
What followed was a sublime cover drive, executed to perfection as the ball sped through the cover point region for a glorious boundary. It was a stroke of beauty that showcased Babar’s technique and natural flair, and it also reminded fans of Virat Kohli’s similar mastery in the same shot.
Earlier in the match, South Africa won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that paid off early. Pakistan’s opener Abdullah Shafique, coming off a tough outing in the previous match, was dismissed for a duck by Marco Jansen in the first over of the innings. Jansen's full delivery nipped in slightly and found the inside edge of Shafique's bat, sending him back to the dressing room without troubling the scorers.
As the match progresses, all eyes will be on Babar Azam, the man who has often pulled his team out of tricky situation. With his early flourish today, Pakistan will hope he can carry on and anchor the innings for Men In Green.
At the time of writing, Pakistan are at 53 at the loss of one wicket with Babar Azam and Saim Ayub at the crease.
