Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as captain of the Indian Test side and has started off his journey on a positive note. He walked out to bat at number 4 after India lost two wickets for 92 and did not look in trouble at any point in his innings.
The Prince of Indian cricket was solid in his defence, and whenever he got any loose deliveries, the batter did not miss out. The right-hander smashed boundaries all over the ground and even hit Woakes for three fours in a single over.
Shubman Gill's Steps Up In His Debut Innings As Test Captain
The Indian captain got to his fifty in the 43rd over of India's innings with a lovely boundary off the bowling of Josh Tongue. Gill reached the landmark in just 56 balls, and it is now his fastest half-century in Test cricket.
His previous two fastest fifties also came against England when Ben Stokes and his boys travelled to India in 2024. In Vishakapatnam, Shubman Gill hit fifty from just 60 balls, while in Dharamsala, he hit a half-century in 64 deliveries.
List Of Fastest 50s For Shubman Gill In Test Cricket (by balls):
- 56 balls vs England, Leeds, 2025
- 60 balls vs England, Vizag, 2024
- 64 balls vs England, Dharamsala, 2024
Shubman Gill also became the ninth Indian to score a fifty in the maiden innings as Test captain. He is now the youngest to do so at 25 years and 285 days and has beaten Mansoor Ali Khan's long-standing record.
Indian fans would be hoping that Gill continues on his merry ways and notchs up a century as well to take India to a pole position. Yashasvi Jaiswal has already smashed a century in his first innings on England shores, and the young Indian team has shown great confidence and skills so far.
