Brief Scores: Bangladesh: 245-9 (50 overs) [Mushfiqur Rahim: 66 (75), Mahmudullah: 41* (49); Lockie Ferguson 3/49 (10), Trent Boult 2/45 (10)] lost to New Zealand: 248-2 (42.5 overs) [Daryl Mitchell: 89* (67), Kane Williamson: 78 retired hurt (107); Mustafizur Rahman 1/36 (8), Shakib Al Hasan 1/54 (10)] by eight wickets.

New Zealand cantered themselves to an easy win over Bangladesh to make it three-in-three this 2023 World Cup at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Boult, Ferguson struck early before Mushfiqur fightback

Trent Boult jolted struggling Bangladesh opener Litton Das off the first ball of the match, while Lockie Ferguson joined in the party a while later by removing his partner Tanzid Hasan. Ferguson also trapped number three, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, with a short ball, and part-timer Glenn Phillips struck the very next delivery to dismantle Bangladesh’s top-order at 56-4.

Captain Shakib Al Hasan and fellow seasoned campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim staged a fighting 96-run stand where the former contributed with a calculated 40 from his end. Rahim top-scored with 66 to register his 48th ODI half-century becoming one of Matt Henry’s two victims from the innings.

Mahmudullah (41*) clubbed a few at the death to elevate Bangladesh to a respectable 245-9. Ferguson unfurled the spell of the innings with a 3-49 while Mitchell Santner kept things quiet from his end through his economical 10-over spell.

Williamson shines on comeback, steers NZ to easy win

Rachin Ravindra was promoted as the New Zealand opener alongside Devon Conway; however, the star all-rounder failed to live up to the occasion as he was dismissed for just nine by Bangladesh’s new-ball gun Mustafizur Rahman.

Devon Conway stabilized New Zealand’s run-chase with a crafty 45 before he was trapped in front by rival skipper Shakib Al Hasan against the run-of-play. His dismissal paved the way for Daryl Mitchell, who joined hands with skipper and comeback Kane Williamson for a monumental 108-run partnership.

Williamson, who started cautiously, soon picked up the pace to unleash yet another elegant run-chase special. While he retired himself out at 78, his partner Daryl soon finished off the proceedings by bludgeoning an unbeaten 89 from just 67 balls.

New Zealand eventually conquered Bangladesh’s total with eight wickets and more than seven overs to spare and registered their third win in succession this 2023 World Cup.
