Brief Scores: New Zealand: 273 all out (50 overs) [Daryl Mitchell: 130 (127), Rachin Ravindra: 75 (87); Mohammed Shami 5/54 (10), Kuldeep Yadav 2/73 (10)] lost to India: 274-6 (48 overs) [Virat Kohli: 95 (104), Rohit Sharma: 46 (40); Lockie Ferguson 2/63 (8), Mitchell Santner 1/37 (10)] by four wickets.

Team India made it five out of five by defeating New Zealand to sustain their winning momentum in the ongoing 2023 World Cup. The win also helped the ‘Men in Blue’ to displace Tom Latham and co. from the top of the points table.

Mitchell pounds 130 before Shami cleans up tail

Team India, after winning the toss and opting to field, jolted New Zealand early with two wickets inside the powerplay. Mohammed Siraj and comeback man Mohammed Shami both struck within their opening spells before New Zealand batting all-rounders Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell shared a record 159-run stand for the third wicket.

Mitchell notched up his fifth ODI ton to top-score in the innings with his near run-a-ball 130. The cricketer became Shami’s fifth victim of the day in the penultimate ball as his death-overs fury lifted his side to a competitive 273.

Apart from Shami’s five-fer, Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets in the innings while Jasprit Bumrah and Siraj pocketed a wicket each in their respective 10-over spells.

Virat Kohli punches out yet another run-chase special

Rohit Sharma launched four sixes in his entertaining 46 and formed a 71-run opening alliance with Shubman Gill. Leading India to a flying start, both cricketers fell in quick succession at the hands of Lockie Ferguson. Their sudden dismissals prompted Virat Kohli to take up a cautious approach, as he ended up playing second fiddles to Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul for the subsequent two wickets.

Kohli also slapped his fourth 50-plus score of the tournament, and fell at the brink of India’s victory for 95. Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 39 eventually steered India to a four-wicket win, with two overs still intact in the game.
