Virat Kohli notched up his sixth fifty-plus score of the 2023 World Cup through his latest batting masterclass against South Africa at the Eden Gardens. The cricketer arrived to the crease within the powerplay, following the early dismissal of captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma.

With Shubman Gill also making his way back to the pavilion a while later, the Indian batting veteran crafted over 100 runs for the third wicket with middle-order star Shreyas Iyer.

Notably, through the course of his latest batting effort, Virat Kohli has now joined a significant ODI club, for a milestone previously breached only by all-time great Sachin Tendulkar.

Virat Kohli joins Sachin Tendulkar for an elite club

Soon after reaching his half-century, Virat Kohli registered the 6,000th run of his ODI career on Indian soil. The 35-year-old became only the second Indian batsman, as well as second overall, to mint over 6,000 ODI runs in home conditions.

Among all batters in world cricket, Kohli is also the second highest ODI run-getter in home conditions, leading third-placed Ricky Ponting by nearly 500 runs. The former Australian skipper listed 5,521 runs in Australia during his playing days, while Tendulkar leads the elite race, having tallied 6,976 runs in India out of his 18,000-plus career runs.

Virat Kohli, meanwhile, crossed the 6,000-run barrier in his 116th innings for Team India, making him the fastest to breach the landmark figure. Overall, the cricketer has over 13,000 ODI runs to his name, with 48 tons and 71 additional scores of fifty or more.

Interestingly, Kohli is also inching closer to a number of Sachin Tendulkar records, including the all-time tally of most ODI centuries. The former cricketer retired with 49 ODI tons to his name, and the modern-day batting legend has equalled it with a gritty knock against the Proteas.
