Brief Scores: South Africa: 357-4 (50 overs) [Rassie van der Dussen: 133 (118), Quinton de Kock: 114 (116); Tim Southee 2/77 (10), Trent Boult 1/49 (10)] defeated New Zealand: 167 all out (35.3 overs) [Glenn Phillips: 60 (50), Will Young: 33 (37); Keshav Maharaj 4/46 (9), Marco Jansen 3/31 (8)] by 190 runs.

South Africa bossed over New Zealand with a big win in Pune, their sixth of the 2023 World Cup as they displace hosts India from the top of the points table.

Centuries from Quinton, Rassie shoot SA to 357

As has been South Africa’s template this 2023 World Cup, the Proteas amassed yet another 300-plus total, this time a 357 against New Zealand in Pune. Opener Quinton de Kock listed a near run-a-ball 114 to notch up his fourth century of the tournament, while number three Rassie van der Dussen top-scored in the innings with 133 from just 118 balls.

The duo took a special liking to New Zealand’s pace veteran and comeback man Tim Southee, who claimed a couple of wickets at an expense of 77 runs from his 10 overs. David Miller blasted a 30-ball 53 in the death overs, while Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram shared 21 unbeaten runs from just eight deliveries to turbo-charge South Africa to 357-4.

Maharaj, Jansen fold up NZ for just 167

South Africa’s new-ball speedster Marco Jansen removed Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra inside the powerplay to break New Zealand’s back early in their run-chase. His twin bursts with the new-ball were complemented by Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee, as the duo dismissed Tom Latham and Will Young against the run-of-play to account for the entirety of top half of New Zealand for just 90 on the board.

Lead spinner Keshav Maharaj scythed through New Zealand’s lower-order, before Glenn Phillips frustrated the Proteas with a rebellious 50-ball 60. The ‘Black Caps’ eventually folded up for 167 to hand South Africa a huge 190-run table-topping win.
