New Zealand arrive in Chennai for their third game of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Friday (October 13) in spectacular form. The BlackCaps comprehensively defeated reigning champions England in their tournament opener and backed it up with a dominating performance against the Netherlands.
Up against them will be a side that has been largely inconsistent with its on-field performances. Bangladesh flexed their muscles past the hapless Afghanistan side in their opening game but looked short of depth and quality to give England any sort of contest in their next fixture in Dharamshala.
NZ vs BAN: Team Previews
New Zealand
New Zealand will welcome the timely return of regular skipper Kane Williamson and could look to pack their side with an extra spinner for a Chennai surface that turned square for left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the India-Australia league encounter.
While the promotion of Rachin Ravindra up the order and the effective part-time skills of Glenn Phillips have given the Kiwis more options with their spin attack led by allrounder Mitchell Santner, they could also squeeze in experienced wristspinner Ish Sodhi for this one.
Sodhi had troubled the Bangladeshi batting unit on a similar surface at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka during the recent series, taking 6 for 39 in the second One-Dayer.
Even if the track plays truer than it did for India's hefty win against the Aussies, the BlackCaps always have the luxury to retain a four-men pace battery considering also the presence of fast-bowling allrounder James Neesham in the squad.
Bangladesh
Bangladesh couldn't have asked for a better surface to try and upstage the BlackCaps and regain their lost mojo. The turning track at Chepauk gives them a brighter chance to start on an even footing and potentially bag a major scalp.
The Bangla Tigers were considered one of the darkhorses for the tournament but their lacklustre run at the Asia Cup and heavy loss versus England has brought down expectations. However, conditions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium allow them to play to their strengths by bringing in an extra tweaker to support Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Bangladesh don't have the luxury to field a wristspinner who could've complimented the Shakib-Miraz duo perfectly. But the presence of off-spinner Mehidy Hasan gives them the option to pack their side with a third tweaker while still retaining the pace pair of Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman.

NZ vs BAN: Chennai Pitch Report
The track at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai played true to its historic reputation during the venue's first game of the tournament. The pitch offered consistent grip and turn to the spinners, especially in the first half where Indian spin trio of Jadeja, Kuldeep and Ashwin picked up six wickets between them for 104 runs in 30 overs. The surprising factor, however, was the uneven bounce that the pitch had for pacers along with late seam movement. A similar track in the offing could mean trouble for batters from both sides in the New Zealand-Bangladesh game.

NZ vs BAN: Winner Prediction
Bangladesh have the spin arsenal to give New Zealand a hard time at Chepauk. But expect the Kiwis' allround depth and quality to propel them past the tricky opposition even on a spin-friendly surface.
