Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman made a roaring comeback into the side by scoring a match-winning 81 against Bangladesh on October 31 in their must-win 2023 World Cup game. Moreover, the cricketer also tonked the fastest-ever century among all Pakistan batters in World Cup history by taking New Zealand to cleaners in his very next outing in Bengaluru.

The dashing opening batsman had played Pakistan’s opening match of the tournament against Netherlands before he was subsequently dropped to make way for preferred opener Imam-ul-Haq. The decision backfired for the Pakistan camp as Imam managed to score just 162 runs from his six innings, maintaining an average of a meagre 27.

Owing to his repeated struggles, the 27-year-old was replaced by Fakhar Zaman in the playing XI in team’s must-win games against Bangladesh and New Zealand. Fakhar grabbed the opportunity with both hands, drawing praise from the entire Pakistani cricketing spectrum and even grabbing the attention of legendary Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag.

Sehwag trolls Imam-ul-Haq over “Protein” grumble

Imam-ul-Haq, already facing the ire of numerous fans for his poor run with the bat, coped further criticism after he cited the lack of protein consumption as the reason behind Pakistan’s inability of hitting sixes at the top of the order.

Fakhar Zaman, on the other hand, belted seven sixes while opening the innings against Bangladesh in his 81-run knock, and launched nine more hits over the fence against New Zealand in Bengaluru the following game until rain interruption.

Virender Sehwag praised Fakhar for his sublime run-chase effort, and took a dig at Imam-ul-Haq for his dietary complain. The former opening batsman and all-time Indian legend also mocked the Pakistan team management for keeping Fakhar out of the playing XI during a major part of their World Cup 2023 crusade, as they ended up losing four matches in a row to fall at the brink of an elimination.

In the meantime, Fakhar Zaman listed a 63-ball century against New Zealand and completed the milestone figure inside the first 20 overs of the Pakistani run-chase. Employing an enterprising display with the bat, the cricketer belted seven boundaries and nine sixes in his knock until rains halted play in Bengaluru.
