Rain has walked in uninvited at Kingsmead, Durban and it has already thrown a spanner in the works ahead of Match 18 of SA20 2025-26 between Durban’s Super Giants and Sunrisers Eastern Cape. What was supposed to be an exciting evening clash has instead turned into a waiting game with umbrellas out and covers firmly in place.
With drizzle refusing to budge and the toss pushed back, fans are now asking the big question: will the DSG vs SEC match be abandoned due to rain?
Rain takes early control at Kingsmead
Live visuals from Kingsmead tell a worrying story. A steady drizzle continues to fall, and the pitch has remained under covers for a long time now. At 5:02 PM local time, officials had no choice but to delay the toss due to the damp conditions. Even after that, the rain showed no signs of easing.
As the clock ticked past 5:30 PM local time, covers stayed on, ground staff waited it out and players were left twiddling their thumbs in the dressing rooms. By 5:52 PM (9:22 PM IST), the drizzle was still around, which made it clear that this could be a long night in Durban.

The weather forecast is far from encouraging. Conditions remain gloomy, with heavy cloud cover hanging over the stadium and rain threatening to have the final say.
Humidity is high, cloud cover is almost full, and the probability of precipitation sits at a worrying 70 per cent. With gusty winds into the mix, it is clear the weather gods are not in a generous mood. Even if the rain stops briefly, drying the outfield could take time.
SEC flying high; DSG aiming to climb up
What makes the delay more frustrating is the context of this game. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are flying high with three wins and are sitting comfortably at the top of the points table. They have momentum, confidence, and everything going their way.
On the other hand, Durban’s Super Giants are stuck at the penultimate spot. With just one win so far, they badly need game time and points to stay alive in the race. A washout would do them no favours and could leave them chasing their tail later in the tournament.
Will DSG vs SEC be abandoned?
At this stage, a full washout hasn’t been confirmed, but the signs aren’t great either. With rain continuing and the forecast not improving much over the next few hours, overs could be reduced if play resumes late. However, if the drizzle refuses to clear, abandonment remains a real possibility.
For now, it is a case of wait and watch. The covers are on, officials are keeping a close eye and fans are hoping the clouds finally blink first.
