David Miller knocks down Ryan Rickelton [Source: @SA20_League/x.com]
The SA20 is already in full swing with big sixes, toe-crushing yorkers and some moments that remind you cricket is not always life and death. Sometimes, it is just players having fun in the middle and that is exactly what fans got during the recent clash between MI Cape Town and Paarl Royals.
A viral video featuring Ryan Rickelton and David Miller stole the show and showed why cricket still has a heartbeat beyond the scoreboard. The Paarl Royals vs MI Cape Town match itself went right down to the wire at Boland Park on Friday and it was the former who defended 181 to secure a thrilling one run win.
Ryan Rickelton and David Miller share a light-hearted moment during PR vs MICT SA20 match
The moment that lit up social media came early in MI Cape Town’s chase in the third over. Rickelton tapped the ball softly to mid-off and bolted for a risky single. Miller swooped in, fired the throw, and for a split second, Rickelton lost his bat but he made his ground easily.
What happened next had fans chuckling. Rickelton walked up, exchanged a few words, and Miller, in full big-brother mode, pulled him close and jokingly dumped him on the turf. For a flash, it looked serious. Then both burst out laughing.

Rickelton’s quickfire start ends too soon
On the cricketing front, Ryan Rickelton didn’t waste time. He and Rassie van der Dussen went hard at the top and gave MI Cape Town early momentum. Rickelton smashed 36 off just 20 balls and looked set for something bigger.
Then came the twist as Sikandar Raza turned the game on its head. He removed Rickelton first, then sent Nicholas Pooran packing and followed it up by knocking over Tom Moores first ball.
Late in the chase, Ottniel Baartman applied the choke. He dismissed van der Dussen and Jason Smith, tightening the screws when it mattered most. MI Cape Town needed 15 in the final over. Kagiso Rabada launched a massive six and then fell the very next ball.
With six needed off the last delivery, George Linde struck it sweetly, but the ball died just short of the rope as MI fell short by just a solitary run. Baartman finished with four wickets as Paarl Royals held their nerve and pulled off one of the tightest wins of the ongoing SA20 season.
Ryan Rickelton misses out on South Africa squad for T20 World Cup 2026
While Rickelton is grabbing headlines in SA20, the international picture tells a tougher story. South Africa announced their squad for T20 World Cup 2026 and Rickelton’s name wasn’t on the list. The southpaw missed out with Quinton de Kock getting the nod after a strong return to T20 cricket.
Rickelton’s T20I numbers this year haven’t screamed selection. He has scored just 118 runs in five innings at an average of 23.60 with a lone 71 against Australia. Overall, he has 381 runs from 18 T20Is at an average just over 21, strike rate north of 134 and two fifties.
For now, Rickelton will keep doing what he does best in SA20. Bat hard, smile harder and wait for his next shot at the big stage.
