The post-lunch session during the second Test at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, witnessed the Indian team extend their dominance in the game, amassing a huge first innings score of 438. After starting the second session on Day 2 at 373/6, the team managed to add an additional 75 crucial runs.

How did the session pan out?

Kishan-Ashwin duo defies West Indies attack

Ishan Kishan and Ravichandran Ashwin displayed a combination of meticulous batting and strategic patience. The pair resumed their partnership post-lunch with determination. The momentum shifted in India's favour when Ashwin dispatched Shannon Gabriel for back-to-back boundaries.

Near escape and eventual dismissal for Kishan

Kishan a close shave when Kirk McKenzie, making his debut, dropped his catch at mid-wicket on Jason Holder's delivery. The prodigious batter failed to capitalize on the dropped catch, as he was caught behind off the very next ball, curtailing his innings at 25. His dismissal brought a slow phase to the match as both the teams preferred defensive play, with the Indian batters refraining from aggressive shots.

Ashwin stands firm as wickets tumble

With wickets falling at the other end, Ashwin held his ground. Jaydev Unadkat's brief stand came to an abrupt end at the hands of Jomel Warrican. Soon after, Mohammed Siraj also fell prey to Warrican's bowling, departing for a duck after being adjudged LBW.

Ashwin's fifty fuels India's Total

Ashwin maintained his impressive form against the West Indies, eventually bringing up his fifty with back-to-back boundaries off Kemar Roach. With an aim to pile on some quick runs, the off-spinner adopted an aggressive approach. However, his innings ended after scoring a well-made 56 off 78 balls as he was cleaned up by Roach. This marked the end of India's first innings with a massive total of 438.
