Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting said that the Pat Cummins-led unit was "caught in the headlights' amid a sensational onslaught by Zak Crawley and Joe Root on the 2nd day of the ongoing Manchester Test.

Crawley pulverized a helpless Australian attack into pieces during England's 1st innings, smashing a brutal 182-ball 189 with the help of 21 fours and three sixes.

Skipper Cummins arguably had his worst day as Test captain and as a bowler as his tactics and bowling were crushed to the hilt by Crawley and Root.

Admitting the same, Ponting said that the current Australian team had never been under so much pressure as they were on the 2nd day.


He also added that on reflection, think-tank will admit that they could have done a few things differently.

"I think they felt the pressure [yesterday]. I think they just got caught in the headlights a little bit," Ponting said on the ICC Review. "I think this team has never been put under that pressure ever. Pat Cummins, as a captain, has never been put under that pressure ever," he stated.

"There is probably an hour of yesterday they would like to have back and be clearer in what they were trying to do with their plans and execution," he noted.

He also added that, on reflection, think-tank Meanwhile, England's onslaught continued on the third day as Jonny Bairstow picked off from where the likes of Crawley had left as he smashed a brutal 99* to help the hosts swell their lead past the 250-run mark.

At the time of writing, Australia had already lost in-form opener Usman Khawaja with a score of 39.
