The first ODI between India and Sri Lanka is underway at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Hosts won the toss and elected to bat first. Meanwhile, the Rohit Sharma-led side took over the field wearing black armbands.

Notably, the Men in Blue have donned the black armbands to honour former India cricketer, coach Anshuman Gaekwad, who breathed his last on Wednesday night at a private hospital in Vadodara at the age of 71.

Gaekwad had been battling cancer for a long time and also made it to the news after he faced financial crises in his treatment.

Who Was Anshuman Gaekwad?

Gaekwad played 40 Test games for India from December 1974 to December 1984 and also featured in 15 ODIs.

In addition to his playing career, Gaekwad served as the coach of the Indian cricket team in two different stints. Under his guidance, India reached the finals of the 2000 Champions Trophy.

It is worth noting that the 1983 World Cup winning squad, came forward to start a fundraising for Anshuman Gaekwad before BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced a 1 crore financial aid for the former India cricketer.

The following afternoon, Gaekwad was cremated in Vadodara, Gujarat, his hometown.

Team India is wearing black armbands today for former Indian cricketer and coach Aunshuman Gaekwad, who passed away on Wednesday.

At the time of writing this article, Sri Lanka are 7/1 after 3 overs.
