The Indian team found itself steering through a last-minute shuffle before the much-anticipated fifth Test against England in Dharamsala. The unexpected development came in the form of an injury to Rajat Patidar, who was been sidelined following an injury during a training session, as revealed by captain Rohit Sharma at the toss.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that Patidar was struck on his left ankle during the team's practice session on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. The impact of the injury rendered him sore and ultimately unavailable for the final India versus England Test.

This development led to Devdutt Padikkal being called up to fill Patidar's shoes, making him the 314th player to don the Indian jersey in Test cricket.

The change comes despite skipper Rohit Sharma's previous vote of confidence in Patidar, who had underwhelmed with a series of low scores in his debut series. Patidar's scores of 32, 9, 5, 0, 17, and 0 in the three Tests he played were not reflective of the high hopes placed on him.

In addition to Patidar’s exclusion and Padikkal's inclusion, the Indian team welcomed back Jasprit Bumrah, replacing Akash Deep.

Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar's absence is a blow to the team's original plans, but it has opened the door for Devdutt Padikkal to showcase his mettle at the international level. As the saying goes, "one man's loss is another man's gain," Padikkal will be eager to make the most of this unexpected opportunity.

As the curtains rise for the fifth Test in Dharamsala, all eyes will be on the new and returning faces in the squad, anticipating how they will steer the team to a win in this match.
