On Saturday, January 17, UP Warriorz locked horns against the Mumbai Indians in the first game of a doubleheader day. The two teams squared off at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The defending champions won the toss and asked Meg Lanning’s UP to bat first.

Interestingly, Lanning and the entire UP squad walked onto the pitch wearing special jerseys. Usually, UP have a CSK-like yellow kit, but for the ongoing match against the Mumbai Indians, UP added pink colour to their shirts.

The change has made fans curious, and this article will explain the reason behind UP donning a special jersey against the Mumbai Indians.

UP Warriorz put out a message for girls' education

Notably, UP Warriorz have sought the WPL as a platform to promote girl’s education. UP Warriorz partnered with the Educate Girls Foundation, an organisation that works to bring out-of-school girls back into classrooms across India.

The campaign message read,  “Education for Girls – Every Opportunity Matters.”

"Today isn’t just about a jersey. It’s about dreams that demand space, voice, and belief. PINK isn’t just a colour today, it’s a cause we wear with pride,” read UP Warriorz message ahead of the match against Mumbai Indians.

Notably, the two captains also posed with the motto during the toss and clicked pictures.

IPL teams also promote awareness

For the unversed, UP Warriorz are not the only team to promote awareness, but IPL teams like RCB and Gujarat Titans too wear special jerseys to show their support for different causes.

RCB have a ritual of wearing green jersey in one of their games each season to create awareness for environment and more plantation. Similarly, Gujarat Titans too have a lavendar jersey for spreading awareness against breast cancer.

RCB have this ‘Go Green’ campaign,  a initiative they started back in 2011 to spread awareness about protecting the environment. Last year, the defending champions wore the jersey against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Sunday, April 13.

On Sunday, May 18, Gujarat Titans wore special jersey against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium for awareness against breast cancer.

UP Warriorz looking to shift momentum

UP Warriorz got off to the worst possible start in WPL 2026 as they lost their first three matches. However, the Meg Lanning-led side regained confidence and registered their first win against Mumbai Indians when they beat the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side by seven wickets courtesy of Harleen Deol's heroics.

Talking about the ongoing match, UP are doing well in the reverse fixture as well and have put 100/1 in 11.5 overs. Meg Lanning have got off to the perfect start and slammed a 35-ball fifty to put her side in a commanding position.

Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have got off a mixed start as they have two wins in four games and suffered defeats against RCB and UP Warriorz.
