In the ongoing Champions Trophy match between India and Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium, the Men in Green won the toss and opted to bat first. The decision did not go as planned, as Pakistan failed to put on a big score on the board.
Notably, Rohit Sharma was like a live wire on the field, constantly making field changes and rotating the bowlers to trouble Pakistan. However, the hitman went out of the field for a while after he reportedly pulled his hamstring or had some trouble, for which he had to walk off the field to receive medical attention.
Rohit Sharma Left The Field In First Innings
In his absence, Shubman Gill took charge, but Rohit returned to the field in the 17th over of the match. However, few reports mentioned that Rohit didn't return to the field fully fit, but was still in discomfort. Meanwhile, this article will shed light on why Rohit was forced to return to the field despite an injury due to ICC rule and to avoid a Fakhar Zaman-like scenario.
Why Did Rohit Sharma Field vs Pakistan Despite Injury?
It is worth noting that ICC has a rule that a player who leaves the field because of an injury or other reasons, has to spend the same amount of time on the field for which he went out once he returns to the ground to be re-eligible to bat or ball.
Thus, in Rohit's case, he needed to spend the amount of time on the field for which he was out of the ground to bat. Now what happened in Fakhar's case was that he was out of the field for more time than he was present on the field during Pakistan's bowling against New Zealand.
Thus, the ICC rule did not allow him to open the innings and he came to bat at No.4. Similarly, Rohit didn't want to disrupt his batting order and the team's combination and to open the innings, he spent the time on the field despite a potential discomfort.
