Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey got his stumps rattled late on Day 3, courtesy of a thunderbolt from Chris Woakes. The cricketer arrived to the crease after overnight batter Mitchell Marsh nicked one to Jonny Bairstow to become Woakes’ first victim of a rain-hit day here at Leeds.

Carey’s dismissal came at the worst possible time for the visitors, as they slumped to 139-6 in their second innings, thus taking their lead to a mere 165 with just four more wickets in hand.

Alex Carey falls prey to extra bounce from Woakes

Australia resumed their second innings late on Day 3 at 116-4, with overnight batters Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh occupying the crease. The latter of the two nicked behind early to hand Chris Woakes his first wicket of the evening, and his second of the innings.

The English speedster also dismissed Alex Carey a while later, to send him packing back to the pavilion for just five. Some extra bounce from Woakes prompted the Australian wicketkeeper to drag the ball on to the stumps in his attempted leave.

Earlier, the Australians were shot out for 263 despite Mitchell Marsh’ heroic run-a-ball 118 on Day 1. Visiting skipper Pat Cummins led his side’s bowling response and claimed six wickets in his spell to dismiss the Englishmen for 237.

Australia, with their 26-run first innings lead, lost four wickets to reach 116 by stumps on Day 2.

The English bowlers took advantage of the overcast conditions on the third evening, after rains had washed nearly two full sessions of the day. The hosts continue to persist with pace despite Moeen Ali’s Day 2 strikes and they are currently on the verge of dusting out the Australians within a reasonable lead.
