In an exhilarating clash between India and New Zealand during the 2023 World Cup's 21st match, fans witnessed a rollercoaster of emotions as Virat Kohli nearly etched his name into the record books with a remarkable innings. The thrilling encounter took place on October 21, 2023, with India ultimately emerging victorious. Despite Kohli's valiant effort, he fell just short of a century.

The match began on a positive note for India, allowing them to seize the upper hand early on. New Zealand, the Blackcaps, managed to post a challenging total of 273 runs.

However, the game took a dramatic turn when Virat Kohli's brilliant innings came to an end after amassing 95 from 104 deliveries.

In the 47.4th over, Kohli attempted to send Matt Henry's fuller delivery out of the park but was caught near the boundary. It was a slower delivery from Henry, and Kohli's attempt to clear the deep mid-wicket boundary ended in disappointment. His attempt to lift the ball straight over long-on was foiled as the bat twisted in his hands upon impact, sending the ball skywards. Glenn Phillips, stationed at deep mid-wicket, made no mistake in taking a simple catch to send Kohli back to the pavilion.

The batting maestro could have opted for a safer route along the ground, but a twist in the bat face spelled his downfall.

As the match reached its climax, India managed to secure the win, their first against New Zealand since 2019. The 18-run loss from that match had remained fresh in the memories of Indian cricket fans. This victory was especially significant, considering the high stakes of the 2023 World Cup.
