In a remarkable feat, Rohit Sharma has etched his name in the golden books of Indian cricket history by surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to establish the highest average as an Indian opener in Test cricket.

Rohit's consistent and stellar performances at the top of the order have propelled him to this milestone, showcasing his prowess in the longer format of the game.

Rohit Sharma, currently leading India in the boxing day test against South Africa, has accumulated 3682 runs across 53 test games in his over a decade-long career. His average, as displayed by Star Sports, currently stands at 52.4, which is the highest amongst the group of Indian openers who have ever scored 1000+ runs for India in tests. He topped Sunil Gavaskar's 50.3 average record to script history.

Having said that, Rohit Sharma's journey as a Test opener has been nothing short of spectacular. The elegant right-hander, known for his aggressive batting in limited-overs cricket, made the transition to the top of the order in Test matches with finesse. His ability to adapt his game to the demands of Test cricket has been a key factor in his success as an opener.

Surpassing Sunil Gavaskar, a cricketing icon and one of the greatest batsmen in the history of the sport, is a testament to Rohit Sharma's consistency and skill in the red-ball format. Gavaskar held the record for the highest average as an Indian opener for decades, making Rohit's achievement even more significant.

However, that being said, the Indian captain and opener are currently getting deceived by the South African pace unit. After he succumbed while playing his trademark shot, the pull shot, in the first inning, Kagiso Rabada bowled him at duck in the second inning.

Currently, India has lost both its openers in its second innings, and the team still trails by 144 runs. The contest is in jeopardy, and India certainly needs a miracle to get back in the contest.
