Former India opener turned sports presenter Sunil Gavaskar is a legend of the game and will go down in history as one of the key figures in Indian cricket.

Several current cricket stars have termed Gavaskar as their idol, including Sachin Tendulkar, but in the latest events, the former India opener namedropped India's finest sportsperson ever and ignored the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Neeraj Chopra.

Gavaskar rated former Badminton player Prakash Padukone as India's Greatest sportsperson.

"In my humble opinion, and with the greatest respect to all other legends and champions from other sports, Prakash Padukone is the finest sportsperson that India has produced. It’s not just his incredible skill with which he conquered the badminton world time and again, but also his demeanour on and off the court that makes him so special in my eyes. Don’t forget he did it at a time when a point could be won only on your serve and not as it is now where it can be won on the opponent’s serve. At a time when the Danes and Chinese were unbeatable, Prakash was sending them packing, barely conceding seven to 10 points and occasionally none at all."

Gavaskar's remarks came amid Padukone's remarks where he stated that the players also need to take responsibility for their defeats in the Olympics. Notably, Prakash Padukone was at the Paris Olympics 2024 with Lakshaya Sen. Recently, Gavaskar too expressed his disappointment over Sen for his exit.
