South African spinner and T20 veteran Tabraiz Shamsi made his BBL debut during match 23 of the 2025-26 season for the Adelaide Strikers. The 35-year-old celebrated the occasion with a fighting three-wicket haul against hosts Perth Scorchers at the iconic Perth Stadium in Perth.
Striking in his second over of the match, Shamsi demonstrated his trademark ‘Phone call’ celebration by removing his shoe after dismissing Scorchers veteran and well-set opener Mitchell Marsh.
Tabraiz Shamsi brings his trademark celebration to Australian grounds
Tabraiz Shamsi, a veteran of over 300 T20 matches spanning numerous leagues like ILT20, CPL, SA20, PSL, IPL and Men’s Hundred among others; made his BBL debut in the 2025-26 edition of the competition against Perth Scorchers.
Turning up for the Adelaide Strikers for the first time in his career, the 35-year-old made his first impact in just his second over of the innings with the wicket of Mitchell Marsh. Notably, shortly after Marsh got holed out by Jamie Overton near the boundary, Tabraiz Shamsi celebrated his maiden BBL wicket in his trademark style: i.e., by removing his shoe and making a ‘phone call’.

Tabraiz Shamsi also dismissed Perth Scorchers’ number three Cooper Connolly for a three-ball duck later in the same over. Later in the innings, the South African veteran removed Scorchers captain Ashton Turner to claim sensational figures of 3-30 in four overs, thus limiting the hosts from 72-0 to 153-8 by the completion of their innings.
In spite of Shamsi’s electrifying three-fer, and a sizzling four-wicket haul from Lloyd Pope; Adelaide Strikers ended up losing the contest by 33 runs to register their third defeat in five games of the ongoing BBL 2025-26 season.
As of now, the Matthew Short-led Strikers are placed number six on the eight-team BBL 2025-26 points table.
