ICC to consider BCB's plea [Source: @cbhushanamazon/x.com]
As per reports, the International Cricket Council is likely to move Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 matches out of India. This comes after star Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman was sacked from the Kolkata Knight Riders’ squad on BCCI’s instructions.
The ICC has not taken a call on the situation yet, but they are likely to make an official announcement in the coming few days, reported Cricbuzz. As per the original schedule, Bangladesh were supposed to play three of their group stage games in Kolkata and one in Mumbai.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had made an official request to move their games out of India earlier in the day, after the Mustafizur Rahaman row. They cited growing concerns over the players’ safety as the reason.
"Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India and considering the advice from the Bangladesh Government, the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh National Team will not travel to India for the tournament under the current conditions," the BCB statement read.
Mustafizur Rahaman removed from KKR squad
Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders announced on Saturday that they had released the Bangladeshi pacer in compliance with BCCI’s instructions. Fizz was the only Bangladeshi player out of seven who was sold in the player auction last month.
"Due to the recent developments that are going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from their squad and BCCI has also said that if they ask for any replacement, BCCI is going to allow that replacement," said BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia to ANI.
As of now, no replacement has been announced by the three-time champions. But they are likely to wait for the tournament to near before the tournament begins. Meanwhile, BCB revoked the NOC granted to Mustafizur Rahman to play in the IPL with immediate effect. Now, even if KKR change their decision, BCB will not allow Mustafizur to play the IPL.
Changes to the schedule could lead to logistical challenges
While moving Bangladesh’s group-stage World Cup matches to Sri Lanka, the co-hosts of the tournament, won’t be too challenging; rescheduling their Super 8 matches, if they qualify, will pose some issues. They will likely play India in the Super 8s, and the BCCI won’t be too keen on moving that match to Sri Lanka.
However, that might not necessarily be the case, as they could end up in a position where they play the matches in Sri Lanka. What the future holds for them in the tournament remains to be seen.
