Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav made his intentions clear from the outset against South Africa at the Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban on November 8. Arriving to the crease inside the opening powerplay, Suryakumar walloped South African paceman Gerald Coetzee for a scorching straight boundary as well as for his trademark six over the fine leg boundary.

His early onslaught alongside opening batter Sanju Samson ensured Team India blazed to 56-1 at the end of the six-over powerplay, despite losing Abhishek Sharma early in the innings.

Asked by captain Aiden Markram to bowl the fourth over of the Indian innings, South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee struck off the first ball of his opening spell by getting rid of Abhishek Sharma. Despite landing an early punch, Coetzee was still taken apart by a newly-arrived Suryakumar Yadav, as the Indian number three crashed a boundary and a six to reap 10 runs from the eventful over.

Suryakumar sealed six of those runs through his trademark flick by helping the ball over the fine leg region.

Earlier in the evening, South African captain Aiden Markram won the toss and invited the Indians to bat first. Even though the visitors lost the early wicket of young Abhishek Sharma, they raced to 56-1 by the end of the opening powerplay and till 99-2 at the halfway stage of the innings.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav himself clobbered two boundaries and a six in his swift 21-run knock, forming 66 runs for the second wicket with half-centurion Sanju Samson in the process. Yadav was eventually done in by Proteas’ quick Patrick Kruger at 90-2 at the end of the ninth over.

The match marks the opening fixture of a three-game T20I series between South Africa and India, and also their first interaction since the high-octane grand finale of the 2024 T20 World Cup back in June this year.
