Steve Smith managed just two in the second Australian innings as he was deceived by England’s comeback man Moeen Ali. He also scored a mere 22 on the opening day of the Leed’s Test to register a rare set of failures in an Ashes outing.

After he was dismissed on the second evening, Smith received a cunning send off from English stumper Jonny Bairstow. The Australian batting veteran clearly felt rattled by Bairstow’s verbal jab at him, and the two were even involved in a brief heated exchange late in the day.

Bairstow’s word-play leaves Smith rattled

Steve Smith arrived to the crease after Marnus Labuschagne’s dismissal left Australia at 68-2. The seasoned campaigner, playing in his 100th Test, had his party disrupted by England off-spinner Moeen Ali.

Smith faced just nine deliveries in the innings as he was caught at mid-wicket while attempting a whip towards the region. Notably, his wicket handed Ali the 200th one of his Test career, and the spinner’s second of the evening.

Just as Smith was about to embark on his way to the pavilion, English wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow yelled:

“See ya Smudge.”

The Australian batter, clearly rattled from the verbal jab, yelled back at the stumper with a query:

“What was that? Hey”

Bairstow, in an instant, downplayed the ordeal by clarifying his remarks. Caught by the stump mic, he responded Smith that he simply yelled:

“I said, Cheers, see ya later”

Earlier in the day, the Australian bowlers shot out the Englishmen for just 237. However, they would have had the hosts floored for a much-lower score, if not for another Ben Stokes’ sparkling lower-order resistance.

Australia launched their second innings with a handy lead of 26, and stretched the same near the 150-run mark during the final stages of Day 2.
