South Africa speed demon Marco Jansen, having emerged as one of the bowlers of the 2023 World Cup, was humbled by an in-form Shubman Gill during their recent faceoff at the iconic Eden Gardens. Pouncing on the explosive start provided by Rohit Sharma, Gill dispatched Jansen for a huge six over mid-on inside the powerplay overs, as the speedster concluded his opening spell without a wicket for the first time in the tournament.

Indian opening batsman Shubman Gill, alongside captain Rohit Sharma, provided their side a blazing start in the powerplay despite the latter’s dismissal in just the sixth over of the innings. While Sharma blasted an entertaining 24-ball 40, Gill piled on the momentum by listing a near run-a-ball 23 of his own.

The youngster negated South Africa’s new-ball threat, as Team India raced to 91-1 by the end of the opening powerplay. Gill, who smoked Lungi Ngidi for a scorching boundary upfront, took a special liking to Marco Jansen, dispatching the young in-form speedster for three fours and a six in quick succession.

The dashing opener danced down the track and thumped Jansen for a huge six over mid-on during the seventh over of the Indian innings, as the young fast bowler finished his opening spell at 0-43 from four overs.

Before and after dispatching Jansen into the stands, the two cricketers were seen exchanging some words.

After launching Jansen for a maximum, Shubman Gill even received a nod of acknowledgment from his partner Virat Kohli at the other end. The opener was eventually dismissed a while later, after he failed to read a stock ball from South Africa’s ace spinner Keshav Maharaj.

Meanwhile, the match between India and South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens marks the eighth respective fixture for both sides in the tournament. While Team India is currently placed at the top of the World Cup 2023 points table, a South African win will help them topple the ‘Men in Blue’ from the ten-team summit.
