Talented Indian batter Shubman Gill luckily escaped a dismissal as Mark Chapman committed a fielding blunder on day 2 of the ongoing third Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai. Regarded for his sharp reflexes on the field, Chapman's uncharacteristic drop proved costly for the visiting side.

India resumed their first innings from 86 for four, as Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant frustrated the visiting bowlers with their scintillating stroke-play. Both players looked completely in rhythm, forcing New Zealand captain Tom Latham to bring Glenn Phillips into the attack.

The Kiwi skipper's tactic proved to be a masterstroke, with the off-spinner inducing a false shot of Gill's bat. From over the wicket, Phillips tossed the ball up, inviting Gill to use his feet and hammer it down the ground.

His risky tactic paid off, as Gill miscued the lofted shot, with the ball gobbling up in the air for a long time. However, Mark Chapman couldn't get hold of the ball, dropping a sitter at long-on and giving Gill a lifeline.

After restricting New Zealand to 235 runs in their first innings, India lost the plot after a dynamic second-wicket stand between Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, despite losing Jaiswal and Virat Kohli in quick succession, the hosts made a remarkable comeback, courtesy of a scintillating partnership between Gill and Rishabh Pant. The stylish batting duo made New Zealand pay for their errors, punishing them with a flurry of boundaries. At the time of writing, India were 155 for four, with Gill and Pant batting on 51* and 50*, respectively.
