The Indian cricket team squared off with South Africa for the first matchup of the three-game ODI series earlier today in Johannesburg. Under beautiful sunny weather, home captain Aiden Markram opted to bat first.

However, the decision backfired as the Indian pace unit unleashed carnage from ball one. Arshdeep Singh clipped a couple of wickets in his first over itself to put the Proteas on the back foot. The initial jitters triggered a mighty collapse as the hosts were bundled with a mere 116 runs on board.

Needless to say, the chase was going to be relatively easy for the visitors. Yet, the Indian openers didn’t want to take any chances and kicked off the second innings processings on a slower note while gradually picking up pace.

Shreyas Iyer Hits Stunning Drive To Get Off The Mark!

While debutant Sai Sudharsan looked sturdy, Ruturaj Gaikwad lost his wicket in the powerplay, which forced Shreyas Iyer to lead the charge.

Though the target on board was lower than what Indians expected, the tables could have turned had India lost a couple of more wickets in quick succession. However, an experienced Iyer ensured that did not happen as he led the charge from ball one.

A half-volley delivery from Wiaan Mulder was put away for four by Shreyas Iyer through a cinematic straight drive. Iyer looked confident, and that was reflected heavily in that shot. The KKR captain knew he had middled the ball to perfection and didn’t even bother to watch the ball hit the ropes.

After that beautiful shot, Shreyas Iyer didn’t look back and went on to slam a commanding half-century to put India in the driver’s seat. While he lost his wicket shortly after hitting a fifty, his peer Sudharsan finished off the formalities to guide India across the finish line.

India chased down the subpar target under 20 overs to lead the three-game ODI series by 1-0. The next game of the series is scheduled to take place at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday, 19th December 2023.
