Brief Scores: South Africa: 116 all out (27.3 overs) [Andile Phehlukwayo: 33 (49), Tony de Zorzi: 28 (22); Arshdeep Singh 5/37 (10), Avesh Khan 4/27 (8)] lost to India: 117-2 (16.4 overs) [Sai Sudharsan: 55* (43), Shreyas Iyer: 52 (45); Andile Phehlukwayo 1/15 (1), Wiaan Mulder 1/26 (4)] by eight wickets.

Team India walloped South Africa in the first ODI at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg to go 1-0 up in their 3-match series.

Arshdeep Singh wrecks South African top-order

Arshdeep Singh celebrated his comeback to India’s ODI setup by demolishing the entirety of South Africa’s top-order with the new-ball. The speedster, after playing three wicketless ODIs back in November 2022 in New Zealand, accounted for the first four South African batters, including the prized scalps of Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen.

Arshdeep’s sublime new-ball gambit floored down the Proteas at 52-4 by the end of their first 10 overs. Emboldened by his early strikes, pace mate Avesh Khan scythed through South Africa’s lower-half with four wickets of his own in his eight-over spell.

Arshdeep also trapped dangerman Andile Phehlukwayo in front to stumps to finish with career-best figures of 5-37, while spin wizard Kuldeep Yadav knocked over debutant Nandre Burger to fold up hosts for just 116 in 27.3 overs.

Shreyas Iyer, Sudharsan take India home with ease

After Ruturaj Gaikwad’s early dismissal at the hands of Wiaan Mulder, his opening partner and ODI debutant Sai Sudharsan cracked his maiden half-century through the course of his 88-run match-winning partnership with senior man Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer himself bludgeoned a 45-ball 52 until he was dismissed by Andile Phehlukwayo at the brink of the finishing line.

Sudharsan ensured Team India romp down South Africa’s with eight wickets and more than 33 overs to spare, thus taking the ‘Men in Blue’ 1-0 up in their three-match series.

The two sides will now face each other at Port Elizabeth on December 19 for the second ODI.
