Stallions batter Babar Azam got off to a flying start against Markhors in the fourth match of the Champions One-Day Cup 2024 season at Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium. Arriving to the crease early in the innings in a chase of 232, Babar belted eight boundaries including five in succession off Shahnawaz Dahani.

Unfortunately for the Stallions, the former Pakistan captain failed to capitalize on his splendid start as he was holed out by Naseem Shah at backward short leg upon reaching a near run-a-ball 44.

Babar Azam’s wicket silences mentor Shoaib Malik

Babar Azam smacked a swift 45 to steady Stallions’ innings to some extent during their chase of 232 against Mohammad Rizwan’s Markhors. However, just as Babar was gaining momentum and looking all set to notch up a notable score, the legendary Pakistan batter was out caught by Naseem Shah at backward short leg off the first delivery of Zahid Mahmood’s opening spell.

Babar’s soft dismissal triggered widespread celebration in the Markhors camp, and left Stallions’ mentor and former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik speechless in the dugout.

Babar Azam was dismissed just a couple of balls after the exit of Stallions number four Tayyab Tahir. Overall, the Stallions slipped from 79-2 to 105 all out to crash to a huge 126-run defeat against Markhors.

Earlier in the match, Markhors amassed 231 from 45 overs largely owing to blistering half-centuries from Pakistan internationals Salman Agha and Iftikhar Ahmed. Number seven batter Abdul Samad and Markhors captain Mohammad Rizwan also chipped in with valiant 30s to make significant contributions to their team’s innings.

Bowlers Zahid Mahmood and Salman Agha later hogged the limelight with the ball by collectively claiming eight Stallions wickets between them. Mahmood himself picked up five wickets at the expense of just 18 runs from his 4.4 overs.
