Delhi Capitals star Shafali Verma pulled off an MS Dhoni in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 match against UP Warriorz at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Monday.

In the final delivery of the 14th over, Verma gently defended a slower delivery from Poonam Khemnar to allow her captain, Meg Lanning, to take a strike in the next over and reach her half-century. Following the selfless act, Verma, who was an aggressor throughout the innings, pointed towards her captain as the Australian exchanged a smile.

Lanning, meanwhile, made the most of the opportunity as she steered the short-pitched delivery from Sophie Ecclestone towards the short third man to take two runs and reach her half-century in the competition. However, she was dismissed on the next delivery after reaching her milestone.

Incidentally, the moment took cricket fans back to the 2014 T20 World Cup semi-final between India and South Africa, where Dhoni made a similar gesture for Virat Kohli.

In the final delivery of the 19th over from Beuran Hendricks, which was slower through the air and bowled short, asking to be hit, Dhoni stood still and defended the delivery.

It allowed the chase-master Kohli to finish the match and seal the deal for India with a boundary off Dale Steyn.
