Former All-Rounder Explains Why India Haven't Won A Test Series In South Africa

Team India, under captain Rohit Sharma, is set to embark on a fresh Test challenge in South Africa, by going up against the hosts at Centurion on December 26.

Interestingly, no Indian team has ever won a Test series in South Africa in each of their eight attempts so far. India’s best result remains their 2010-11 tour when MS Dhoni led them to a 1-1 draw.

Dissecting team’s torrid Test record against the Proteas, former Indian coach Sanjay Bangar has given his take as to why the subcontinental powerhouses are yet to register a single series win in South Africa.

Sanjay Bangar explains India’s poor record in SA

Former coach Sanjay Bangar has given his take as to why Team India has never won a Test rubber in South Africa. As per the ex-cricketer, India’s inability to win an away series against the Proteas is not due to their cricketing skills or lack of it, but it is because they have never played a full-length Test assignment in South Africa.

“India have not won a Test series in South Africa because they play 2 or 3-match Test series. If they get to play four or five-match Test series, it would reflect in their performance," Bangar said while speaking to broadcasters.

Compatible with Sanjay Bangar’s claims, Team India has either played a two-match or a three-match Test series in South Africa, barring their first tour to the country back in 1992-93.

Under Rohit Sharma, the current Indian team will be heading into the series off the back of their number one ICC team rankings in Tests as well as the number one spot on the 2023-25 WTC points table.

The first match of the series will be played between December 26 and December 30 at Centurion Park and the tour will conclude at Cape Town by the first week of January.
