Australia middle-order batter Steve Smith finally found his form after a string of low scores in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he had previously made 2, 0, and 17 against India. In the third Test at the Gabba, Smith played a solid knock, scoring a century. However, his partnership with Travis Head, which had added a massive 241 runs, was finally broken by India.
In the 83rd over of Australia’s first innings, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a perfect delivery that Smith edged to Rohit Sharma in the slip cordon. Rohit made a great diving catch to his right, and Smith, after a fine knock, had to walk back to the dressing room.
He received a standing ovation from the crowd at the Gabba, a fitting tribute to his innings. Bumrah picked up his third wicket of the innings, and Australia lost their fourth wicket.
Rain Washes Out Day 1 of Third Test
The first day of the third Test was heavily impacted by rain. India chose to bowl first, but a heavy downpour led to less than 15 overs of play. Australia ended the day at 28/0. There was a brief interruption in play due to light drizzle in the sixth over, and heavy showers later in the day kept the players off the field.
On Day 2, India made a strong start by taking quick wickets. Bumrah dismissed Australia's openers, Usman Khawaja (21) and Nathan McSweeney (9). Then, Nitish Kumar Reddy removed Marnus Labuschagne for just 12 runs, with Kohli making a brilliant catch at second slip.
At the time of writing, Australia are at 334 for 6 in 88 overs, with Pat Cummins and Alex Carey at the crease.
