Usman Khawaja notched up his 15th Test century in the first Ashes Test in Birmingham. The Australian opener top scored for his side in their first innings, after hosts England had combined 393 upfront.

Khawaja, aided by Travis Head, Alex Carey and Cameron Green stretched Australia’s total till 386, thus leading team’s recovery after they were reduced to 67-3 early on Day 2.

Interestingly, the visitors looked all settled for a notable first-innings lead, before English pacer Ollie Robinson castled Khawaja with a scorching yorker before third lunch of the match.

Usman Khawaja lost overnight batting partner Alex Carey early on Day 3. Batting with the tail, the opener tried increasing the scoring rate as Australia were approaching England’s first innings effort.

When the batting veteran reached 141, he tried stepping out to Ollie Robinson in a bid to go over six catchers within the inner field. However, the cricketer fell to England captain Ben Stokes’ trap and ultimately perished to a searing Robinson yorker.

Overall, Khawaja faced 321 deliveries to whack a counter-attacking 141, his fifth Ashes ton. The left-hander struck 14 boundaries and three sixes in his innings, and ensured England’s lead was restricted to just seven runs despite early breakthroughs.

Meanwhile, England lost both openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett early in their second innings before rain halted play late on Day 3. Australian captain Pat Cummins dismissed Duckett while in-form Scott Boland accounted for Crawley’s dismissal.

At the time of publishing, England reached 28-2, enjoying a 35-run lead over the visitors.
