[Watch] Mustafizur Rahman Strikes Twice With Two Similar Jaffas in 2nd ODI

The echoes of the first ODI were evident at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, as Bangladesh’s premier pacer Mustafizur Rahman repeated a familiar feat, dismissing New Zealand's Will Young in a manner eerily reminiscent of how he took out Finn Allen in the first game.

BAN vs NZ: Mustafizur stunned Kiwis with double strike

Mustafizur, known for his precision and variations, stunned Young with a delivery that brought back memories of the first ODI. Hitting the deck hard in the third over, the ball took an unexpected bounce. Young, caught off-guard, tried to retract his bat but failed to drop his wrists quickly enough. The result was an easy catch for the wicketkeeper off the gloves.

The déjà vu didn't end there. Finn Allen, who had been dismissed by Rahman in the rain-washed first ODI, faced a similar fate again.

In their previous encounter, Rahman had deceived Allen with a slower delivery that moved across him, leading to a sharp catch by Nurul Hasan. In this ODI, after getting the better of Young, Mustafizur ensured Allen didn't settle either, inducing a nick that found its way to the slip cordon.

Meanwhile, the BlackCaps, choosing to bat first after winning the toss, were quickly on the back foot. With both their openers, Young and Allen, falling to Mustafizur’s persistence, their top order looked shaky. The newcomer, Khaled Ahmed, too, marked his debut with a notable scalp, sending Chad Bowes back to the pavillion.

At the time of writing this article, New Zealand is at a cautious 83/3 in 17 overs. Henry Nicholls and Tom Blundell have built a crucial 47-run partnership. They will be aiming to set a competitive total, especially considering Bangladesh's dominant home record.

This three-match series, while significant in its own right, also serves as a build-up to the grand stage of World Cup 2023. With both teams eyeing supremacy, the Kiwis will be well aware of the challenge ahead and the importance of sending a message before the mega event.
