When was the last time a player was able to win fans over both on and off the field? Well, Mohammed Siraj did just that on Sunday (September 17) during India’s Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka.

Firstly, Siraj wreaked havoc with the ball, claiming 6/21 off his seven overs to keep Sri Lanka on the backfoot right from the word-go. His crucial dismissals—four of which came in the span of six balls—kept Sri Lanka from progressing at any point before they were eventually skittled out for a pitiful 50 in 15.2 overs.

India, coming to chase, did not have any sort of trouble before reaching the target in just 6.1 overs with all ten wickets in hand.

After a scintillating show of bowling, it was obvious that Siraj would claim the Player of the Match award in the all-important final. Then, as he was frequently praised for being as grounded as ever, he made a kind gesture that touched the hearts of billions of people around the world.

The groundskeepers, who have been working tirelessly for the past three weeks or so to keep the competition going, received the entire $5,000 prize money from the 29-year-old Siraj, who highlighted all their efforts before the announcement.

India, under Rohit Sharma, will next play a three-match ODI series against Australia, which will begin on September 22 and will run till September 27. After that, the focus will be completely on the ODI World Cup, scheduled to get underway on October 5.
