The Asia Cup 2023 has come to an end with rather anticlimactic final between India and Sri Lanka. After 18 days of intense action, we have India as the champions who have won their eighth title. They remain the most successful team in the competition, with two more titles than the next team in the list (Sri Lanka-6).

There have been plenty of memorable performances during the course of the tournament. While, we witnessed batting masterclasses from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul against Pakistan, Mohammed Siraj decimated the Sri Lankan batting with the ball in the final. We also witnessed all-round brilliance by the young Dunith Wellalage against India in the Super Fours. Now, after the culmination of the tournament, we try and pick out the top performers in the tournament and try and build the best XI for this tournament.

Shubman Gill (IND)

(Matches: 6 Runs: 302 Avg: 75.50 50s: 2 100s: 1)

The Indian opener looked good throughout the tournament. Shubman Gill provided the start in most of the games and against Bangladesh he batted till the end taking India close to a challenging target. Even though, he could not take his team home, Gill's performance throughout the tournament gives him a place in the team.

Rohit Sharma (c) (IND)

(Matches: 6 Runs: 194 Avg: 48.50 50s: 3 100s: 0)

Rohit Sharma looked the perfect leader throughout the tournament. Not only did he score runs with the bat, but also showed how to lead the team and back his players. Sharma is the second opener and also the captain of this team.

Kusal Mendis (wk) (SL)

(Matches: 6 Runs: 270 Avg: 45 50s: 3 100s: 0)

Kusal Mendis was one of the prime reasons for Sri Lanka making it to the final of the tournament. He had three half-centuries under his belt and mostly provided the platform for the lower-order batters to come and launch at the opposition bowling. Even in the final, where all the Sri Lankan batters fell like a pack of cards, the only bit of resistance was provided by Mendis.

Sadeera Samarawickrama (SL)

(Matches: 6 Runs: 215 Avg: 35.83 50s: 2 100s: 0)

While Kusal Mendis has been the catalyst in the Sri Lankan batting order, Sadeera Samarawickrama was the calming influence for the batting line-up. In most of the matches, Samarawickrama came in the middle-order and went about his business pretty silently. His ability to manoeuvre the strike against the spinners gave Sri Lanka the advantage in the middle-overs.

Towhid Hridoy (BAN)

(Matches: 5 Runs: 158 Avg: 31.60 50s: 2 100s: 0)

The Bangladeshi middle-order batter did not start the tournament on a great note. But cometh the Super Four stage, Towhid Hridoy was the biggest positive for the Bangladesh team. He played two very useful knocks under pressure and that earns Hridoy a place in this team.

Charith Asalanka (SL)

(Matches: 6 Runs: 179 Avg: 44.75 50s: 1 100s: 0 Wickets: 4)

Charith Asalanka has been one of the pillars on which Sri Lanka's run rested. He batted decently in the tournament and provided solidity to the team's batting line-up. Asalanka also delivered the goods with the ball in the Super Four game against India and this multi-dimensional aspect of his game sees him seal a spot in this team.

Dunith Wellalage (SL)

(Matches: 6 Wickets: 10 Economy: 4.26)

Asia Cup 2023 saw the birth of a new star for Sri Lanka. Dunith Wellalage showed that he has the temperament to succeed in the big stage. Wellalage looked good with both the bat and the ball and looks like an ideal number eight in this team.

Shaheen Shah Afridi (PAK)

(Matches: 5 Wickets: 10 Economy: 5.73)

Shaheen Afridi bowled some expensive spells during the course of the tournament. But he also bowled some effective spells and the figure of ten wickets in the tournament at an economy of 5.73 earns him a place in the team.

Kuldeep Yadav (IND)

(Matches: 5 Wickets: 9 Economy: 3.61)

The Indian chinaman bowler has been the biggest match-winner for India throughout the tournament. Yadav bowled some game changing spells in the middle-overs and is a must pick for this team.

Mohammed Siraj (IND)

(Matches: 5 Wickets: 10 Economy: 4.63)

Well, till the final of the tournament, Siraj was not a part of the team. But in the summit clash, we saw the best of this bowler and that helped India bundle out the Sri Lankan's for just 50 runs. His spell of 6 for 21 in seven overs will be remembered as one of the bests in ODI history and that also earns him a spot in this team.

Matheesha Pathirana (SL)

(Matches: 6 Wickets: 11 Economy: 6.61)

The Sri Lankan pacer did a great job as a death bowler for his team in the tournament. Although, Pathirana had been occasionally expensive, especially in his first spells, he made some great comebacks in the death overs. Given his performance in the tournament, Pathirana is indispensable in this team.
