On December 9, Mohammed Shami showcased his batting prowess in an unexpected role, delivering a crucial late surge for Bengal against Chandigarh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

The Indian pacer, usually known for his bowling, came in at No. 10 and stole the show with an unbeaten 32 off just 17 balls. Shami started cautiously but shifted gears quickly, taking on Chandigarh bowlers Sandeep Sharma and Nikhil Sharma with some fearless hitting.

In the final over of Bengal’s innings, Shami went all guns blazing. On the second ball, he smashed Sandeep Sharma for a towering six over deep cover. Not stopping there, he struck another six off a wide delivery, once again sending it sailing over deep cover.

To wrap things up, Shami hit a boundary on the last ball, whipping a full toss to deep square leg. His fireworks added 19 runs in the last over, helping Bengal post a total of 159/9 in their 20 overs.

With Mohammed Shami doing well with bat, he can elongate the India's batting line-up in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Bengal Top Order Struggle Against Chandigarh

Earlier, Chandigarh opted to field first, and their decision seemed to pay off initially. Bengal struggled at the top, losing Abhishek Porel for 8 and Karan Lal for a duck. However, contributions from Writtick Chatterjee, Pradipta Pramanik, and Shami helped Bengal recover and reach a respectable score.

Shami’s late heroics not only lifted Bengal’s spirits but also gave their bowlers something to defend. His unbeaten 32 ensured Bengal stayed competitive in a tightly contested match.
