In the 28th match of the ongoing PSL 2024, Quetta Gladiators’ Mohammad Wasim Jnr smashed a six off the last ball of the run chase against Lahore Qalandar’s Shaheen Shah Afridi's bowling to secure the game for his team by six wickets in the edge-of-the-seat thriller in Karachi on Sunday, March 10.

Last-ball finishes are not something everyone gets to witness in every game. It's a rare occurrence in any format of the game. And it's even rarer when a bowler of Shaheen’s quality gets smashed off the last ball. But it happened, and it happened in front of the full-capacity Karachi crowd.

On the last ball of the game, Gladiators needed four runs to win, while Qalandars needed just one dot ball. Shaheen bowled a length delivery at the stumps. Wasim Jnr was deep inside his crease, cleared his front leg, swung hard across the line, giving the kitchen sink at it, and hoicked it over deep forward square leg for a massive six to seal the game.

This was unexpected as it came against Shaheen Afridi and it came off the bat of Wasim Jnr, who’s not renowned for his batting prowess. And since that shot came in the winning cause, it became even more special. Wasim’s last-ball heroics not only propelled his team to the playoffs but also ruled Karachi Kings out of the tournament.

Such was the moment that the legendary Sir Vivian Richards himself ran out from the dugout and celebrated with Wasim Jnr and Saud Shakeel. The 72-year-old West Indies legend sprinted onto the field, and he was pumped up.

Even though they were already knocked out, it will still hurt Shaheen and Lahore for a long time.

Defending 167 was never going to be easy for Qalandars, yet they managed to pull the game down to the wire before something unexpected happened. Saud Shakeel was the pick of the batters for the Gladiators and played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 88 runs. In the end, it was Wasim Jnr who hit that crucial blow to seal the victory for his side.
