Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc emerged as the highlight of the first innings of the second Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test match against India at the Adelaide Oval. The left-arm bowler put on display another episode of his his tryst with a pink ball picking bowling figures of 14.1-2-48-6.

In what was his 15th Test five-wicket haul, it was also his eighth at home, fourth in a day-night match and first against India and in 2024. Readers must note that Mitchell Starc has dismissed six batters in an innings for the first time in the last half-a-decade. Interestingly, the last such instance had also come in a pink-ball Test at the same venue.

Starc, 34, didn’t miss an opportunity to build on his rivalry with Indian counterpart Harshit Rana. With the two already having a go at each other in their first international encounter at the Optus Stadium, Rana was one of Starc’s six wickets on Friday.

It all happened on the penultimate delivery of the 39th over when the right-handed batter had no answer whatsoever to an ultimate Starc yorker. A delivery which had it in it to dismiss any top-order batter was too good for Rana to defend.

Having picked his fifth wicket in the form of Rana, Starc was seen giving a massive grin to him whilst celebrating a personal milestone. For the unversed, Starc outdid Rana by bowling two short deliveries before eventually castling his stumps with a full in-swinging delivery.

Having failed to score a run, fans were bereft of a response from the Indian rookie who simply walked back to the pavilion. Perhaps he has reserved one for his bowling stint against Starc, in particular.

Readers must note that Starc and Rana were part of Kolkata Knight Riders' title-winning Indian Premier League 2024 campaign earlier this year. The two, however, will no longer play against each other after Starc was bought by Delhi Capitals during IPL 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah last month.
