In an exciting match of the Women’s Premier League 2024, Mumbai Indians Women faced off against UP Warriorz Women, with Mumbai's stand-in captain Nat Sciver-Brunt making her captaincy debut in WPL. However, the match took an unfortunate turn for Sciver-Brunt as she was involved in a costly mix-up leading to her run-out at a crucial moment of the game.

Nat-Sciver Brunt and Matthews' miscommunication proves costly

The Nat-Sciver Brunt runout occurred in the closing moments of the 13th over. Sciver-Brunt, who had been batting confidently and was on 19 off 14 deliveries, found herself at the centre of a miscommunication with opener Hayley Matthews.

Sophie Ecclestone delivered a flighted ball to Hayley Matthews who then played it towards cover and instinctively set off for a run. Sciver-Brunt, initially hesitant and observing the ball's trajectory, was prompted into action by Matthews' movement. Unfortunately, a moment of indecision saw both batters pause mid-pitch, leading to a direct face-off.

As both players had crossed paths, Ecclestone smartly lobbed the ball towards the wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy instead of aiming for the bowler's end. This move caught Sciver-Brunt off guard, leading to her run-out for 19 runs, which included two boundaries. This dismissal marked a premature end to what could have been a promising inning for the stand-in captain.

Despite this setback, Hayley Matthews was impressive, contributing a vital 55 off 47 balls before being dismissed. This performance helped Mumbai Indians post 161/6 in their 20 overs.

The team, known for its robust bowling attack, will aim to leverage its strengths to secure a win, hoping to notch up three consecutive victories and go to the top of the WPL 2024 points table.
