Sri Lankan keeper-batter Kusal Mendis continued his dream run in the World Cup, as he hammered a scintillating fifty against Pakistan in the eighth group-stage game of the tournament in Hyderabad. After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka had a disastrous start, losing Kusal Perera early in the innings. However, stellar performances from Mendis and Pathum Nissanka brought their inning back on track, setting the tone for a formidable total.

While Nissanka struck a sensible fifty, Mendis unleashed his beast mode against the Asian rivals, tearing apart the Pakistani bowling lineup.

Although he played several spectacular shots, his hook shot off Haris Rauf grabbed a million eyeballs besides leaving the Pakistani team stunned.

After failing to beat Mendis through pace, Rauf adopted aggressive approach and tested the batter with short stuff. However, the move backfired on the bowler, as Mendis executed a remarkable hook shot, sending the ball over the square leg fence.

Following Nissanka's dismissal, Sadeera Samarawickrama has joined Mendis in the middle, with the duo helping the Lankans cruise to 150 in the blink of an eye. As of writing, the Lankan lions are well-placed at 166 for two, with Mendis and Samarawickrama batting on 79* and 28*, respectively.
