Afghanistan opening batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz attained a huge national record through his majestic century against Ireland in the first ODI of their three-match series in Sharjah.

Opening the innings alongside Ibrahim Zadran, Gurbaz scored 121 runs off just 117 balls and shared a monumental 150-run stand for the first wicket. His innings, sparkled with eight elegant boundaries and six crunching sixes, set up the path for a competitive Afghanistan total and also helped him join former cricketer Mohammad Shahzad for a significant batting record.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who made his international debut back in September 2019, tonked his sixth ODI century through the course of his 121-run special against Ireland at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on March 7.

Rahmanullah’s landmark innings helped him level up with former opening batsman Mohammad Shahzad to become Afghanistan’s joint-highest century-maker in ODIs. While Shahzad listed six centuries in 84 ODI innings between 2009 and 2019, young Gurbaz levelled the feat in just 39 innings.

Apart from shaping up six alluring centuries, Rahmanullah Gurbaz also has four additional scores of 50 or more on his ODI resume.

Regardless, his monumental knock at Sharjah helped Afghanistan soar past the 300-run mark against Ireland in their series-opening first ODI match.

Following the conclusion of Afghanistan’s ongoing fixtures against Ireland, Rahmanullah Gurbaz will fly out to India to join the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the forthcoming IPL 2024 season. The prodigious batting talent was retained by the franchise back in November 2023 during the IPL 2024 retention phase.
