Kasun Rajitha got Sri Lanka off to a perfect start against Afghanistan in Match 6 of the Asia Cup 2023, taking place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. In a match where Afghanistan had to chase 292 in 37.1 overs, the right-arm quick dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the opposition’s most aggressive batter, inside the first 14 balls of their innings.

It was a good-length delivery by Rajitha, which was pitched outside the off stump, and moved away from Gurbaz. The Afghan opener went for a wild swing without moving his feet, only to end up with a thick outside edge.

The ball went straight to Kusal Mendis' big gloves, and Rajitha was delighted to get Gurbaz's wicket so early. The Sri Lankan pacer screamed while celebrating the prized wicket, acknowledging how much it meant in a crucial Asia Cup tie.

Since the beginning, the chase was never on the cards for Rashid Khan & Co., that too in 37.1 overs in order to qualify to the Super Four round. They gambled by promoting Gulbadin Naib to No. 3, but the all-rounder returned to the pavilion after a brisk cameo of 16-ball 22.

At the time of writing, Afghanistan 65/3 after 11 overs, requiring 227 more runs with Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi in the middle, on 22 and four respectively.
