Rashid Khan's 'Lucky' Run-Out Leaves Kusal Mendis Heartbroken Before Century

Kusal Mendis produced a variety of shots in Match 6 of the Asia Cup 2023 at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday (September 5). However, a tragic turn of events forced the Sri Lankan vice-captain to leave the field heartbroken just before reaching his third ODI century.

In his magnificent 84-ball 92, Kusal Mendis scored six fours and three sixes overall and batted with full control throughout the innings. During the 40th over, when Dasun Shanaka hit straight to Rashid Khan, the latter dropped a tough chance. However, the ball went on to break the stumps, and Mendis, placed at the non-strikers’ end, fell short of the crease.

While Rashid and his Afghanistan teammates could not believe their luck, Mendis began to walk before even the final decision taken by the TV Umpire. The Sri Lankan top-order batter knew he was gone in possibly the most unfortunate way, and started to return to the pavilion after the happening.

In the same over, Rashid got the dangerous wicket of Dasun Shanaka as well, cleaning him up with a full-ish delivery.

At the time of writing, Sri Lanka have reached 254/7 in 45.2 overs, with Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage in the middle, batting on 11 and 15 respectively.
